Herbert and Crystal Sandmire

Dr. Herbert F. Sandmire passed away on Feb. 24, 2018 at his home in Green Bay. The Sandmires were recognized in 2014 as “the University’s longest-running donors.” They enhanced a decades-long legacy of generosity with a $1 million scholarship gift for students who intend to pursue a career in medicine or related medical fields. The gift by Dr. Herbert (an OBG-YN) and Crystal Sandmire’s gift tied a record for the University’s largest-ever single scholarship donation. In 2008, the family of Capt. Craig A. Mueller gave $1 million for scholarships, in accordance with the late alumnus’ wishes.

According to the obituary, “More than 700 practicing physicians in the United States have had part of their training or post-graduate fellowship experience under Dr. Sandmire’s direction in Green Bay. His life-long belief was: to be a physician is to be a teacher!”

UW-Green Bay records identify the Sandmires as having the longest uninterrupted string of annual giving — nearly 50 years — among the thousands of private individuals who have supported the University and its students throughout the years. An award-winning doctor of obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Sandmire was a UW-Green Bay community lecturer in Human Biology from 1968 to 1989. Crystal Sandmire, a University alumna who earned her Communication and the Arts degree in 1980, was a charter member and officer of the UW-Green Bay Founders Association. The Sandmires received UW-Green Bay’s highest community honor, the Chancellor’s Award, in 2006.

There will be no formal funeral service but a celebration of life will be held on August 12 at Heritage Hill Visitors’ Center on Webster Ave. Green Bay, WI 54301. Details will be announced at a later date. All friends, relatives and colleagues will be welcomed.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Herbert and Crystal Sandmire scholarship at UWGB or to the charity of your choice.
