Sensitivity, native education center here referenced in ‘squaw’ flap

A Northwoods Wisconsin high school teacher says he unknowingly set off a cultural-awareness dispute by digging out a decades-old math worksheet without noticing it used a highly questionable pun and the word “squaw.” When the family of one of his students, a member of the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe band, brought it to the school’s attention, it led to further discussion and the suggestion that racial insensitivity remains a problem and some districts aren’t doing all they can to promote Act 31 compliance. UW-Green Bay, which has won kudos for its Act 31 education efforts involving both the First Nations Studies and teacher Education programs here, is mentioned in a positive light.
