GREEN BAY – Laken James graduated from Oconto in 2014 as arguably the best basketball player in school history with a résumé that included a school-record 1,655 points and a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.With credentials like that—including a program-record 533 assists—James seemed poised for a big collegiate career. But what held her back her first few years with the Phoenix wasn’t the game being played on the floor but the one going on in her head.James lacked confidence, even though she didn’t realize it at the time. As an athlete her entire life, she just figured she was supposed to be tough and fight through adversity. There was no room to discuss feelings. It had a negative and sometimes noticeable impact on her game, even if her skills remained strong.
