Red-hot ‘Romeo’ the talk of campus

Prof. Brian Sutton is fielding congratulations following the sold-out, world-premiere staging of his original musical “Searching for Romeo” in the Jean Weidner Theatre over the weekend. Not only did Sutton write words and music, and produce, he nimbly fronted the two-man “orchestra” of guitar and keyboard that provided accompaniment for each of the four shows. Theatregoers offered standing ovations and seemed entertained by the clever dialog and often-bawdy takeoff on the classic love story. (We’ll interview Prof. Sutton at a later date on possible plans for “Romeo.” With just enough straight-ahead Shakespeare to anchor the premise, plenty of sly literary references to appeal to devotees, and loads of comedy in a more contemporary drugs, sex and rock’n’roll vein, well… we’d go see it again, or tell friends, if given the chance. Especially loved the Mick Jagger-like strutting and vocals in this version of the Romeo/Juliet death scene.) If you missed our earlier link to Green Bay P-G reviewer Warren Gerds’ recap of the show, it was in the Manitowoc Herald-Times Reporter over the weekend, as well. Click here.
