Aldo Leopold students, parents adjust to new setting at UW-Green Bay after school fire

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — The Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) says students are adjusting well to their temporarily classrooms after a fire damaged their school during the final week of classes.

Aldo Leopold students will spend their last week of classes before summer break on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus.

Liz Wilson has two kids that attend Aldo Leopold. For her, the start to the day on campus was a bit chaotic.

“Drop off actually went pretty smooth, where they had us designated to drop the kids off. But then when I was trying to leave the parking lot, that’s when campus traffic was coming in as well as all of us parents were trying to leave,” said Wilson. “And so, it took me about 45 minutes just to get out of the parking lot.”

GBAPS says traffic should improve Thursday and Friday.

“We had both our Aldo families coming on campus as well as tonight is Preble’s graduation, and so all of the seniors were there this morning as well to practice for tonight’s graduation. And so there was a lot of traffic there this morning. That won’t be the case for the next two days,” said GBAPS Director of Communications Lori Blakeslee.

The district says morning breakfast went smoothly. Technology staff was also on-site to provide Chromebooks for middle school students who left their laptops at school.

With Aldo Leopold students in a new location and environment, both the school district and UW-Green Bay’s University Police say there’s measures in place to ensure student safety.

“We’ve got a number of officers on right now. We’re more than capable,” said Lt. Aaron Walker with UWGB University Police. “We know exactly where the students are. We know the ins and outs of the buildings.”

“There were a lot of parent volunteers there today. There’s a lot of additional other staff that are out at UWGB campus, just to make sure when students are needing to go to the restroom, right? That’s a little bit different than where they would go at school,” said Blakeslee.

Buses are taking students to the campus.

A fire broke out at Aldo Leopold around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Thankfully, no one was inside the building when it happened. Once firefighters located the fire’s origin, it was quickly put out.

The district says it’s grateful to UW-Green Bay for providing the opportunity for students and staff to spend their last few days of the school year together.
