Press-Gazette spotlights Strategic Philanthropy course; all welcome Thursday

We told you here before about Assistant Prof. Lora Warner’s Strategic Philanthropy course, which will award $10,000 to an area nonprofit or nonprofits during a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (May 8) in the Union’s Christie Theatre. On Saturday (May 3), student Madeline Weley explained the project in a Green Bay Press-Gazette “Today’s Take” column, talking about the history of the course, its objectives and the process students use to determine where to award funds. “By learning how to assess needs and effectively donate, students are learning what effective grant writing involves and are encouraged to play a greater role in their community,” Weley writes. “In addition, students learn to collaborate with others that may have different values. One student remarked, ‘You learn to take a back seat to your own emotions and listen to other people’s values and ideas.’ ” Warner and her students would like to remind the University and larger community that Thursday’s event is free and open to the public.
