Strong opinion on American Indian mascots

At a news conference Tuesday, Luanne Funmaker, a freshman at UW-Green Bay, said that when she attended Oneida Nation tribal school, she had to play against schools with Indian mascots, according to the Press-Gazette. “Even since grade school we have (faced) a type of racism,” she said. “Some of it was harsh, and in our face, and some of it was more underlying and standoffish. But it has always been an issue.” Rep. Jim Soletski (D-Green Bay, and a former UW-Green Bay student) and Sen. Spencer Coggs are sponsoring a bill that would create a process for people to complain about race-based logos, nicknames or mascots of schools. Some believe the move could lead to Wisconsin being the first state to ban schools from using American Indian mascots.
