Martin offers tips on surviving post-Election holiday

Our own Ryan Martin and a couple of UW-Green Bay students were featured this weekend in a Green Bay Press-Gazette story on a perhaps-relatable problem: surviving the holidays when families are politically polarized. UW-Green Bay student Jeff Smith said talking politics or religion is against the rules during his family gatherings, while student Joe Mueller said his family’s political divisions often come to the forefront. With the election a still-recent memory, Martin, Human Development and Psychology, said having a plan is critical when it comes to dealing with potentially contentious Turkey Day table talk. “After the election, it could be gloating in some instances, sour grapes, venting … others (are) looking for people to commiserate or celebrate with,” he said. “Think about your goal and wanting to preserve the relationship, and that’s more important than some of the other discussions.” Full story.
