Social Work’s Powell responds to crisis

Nina Powell, a lecturer in Social Work and licensed clinical social worker, was one of the volunteers providing disaster mental health counseling recently. Red Cross responded to a fire in Sheboygan on Sunday, August 21 and set up an emergency shelter at Farnsworth Middle School. The fire resulted in one fatality and a strong need for disaster mental health workers as a result of this crisis. Consequently, the Red Cross opened a MARC (Multiple Agency Resource Center) where community agencies come to one location making the process of obtaining needed resources easier for survivors and put out a call for qualified counselors. Powell worked provided mental health counseling at the MARC and worked to collect supplies for the survivors.
