Student’s study of soil makes journal cover

Graduate student Simone Kolb’s thesis from UW-Green Bay’s Environmental Science and Policy graduate program was awarded the cover of the July-August 2009 issue of the prestigious international journal Soil Science Society of America Journal. Kolb’s paper, “Effect of Charcoal Quantity on Microbial Biomass and Activity in Temperate Soils,” is co-authored by her adviser, Prof. Mathew Dornbush, Natural and Applied Sciences, and graduate committee member Prof. Kevin Fermanich, Natural and Applied Sciences.

Charcoal is a common soil component produced from wildfires and renewable energy production that is increasingly appreciated for its effect on soil fertility. The cover image, taken by UW-Green Bay News and Media Relations Coordinator Mike Heine, and full-length article can be found at http://soil.scijournals.org/content/vol73/issue4/cover.shtml.
