UW-Green Bay Prof. Regan A. Gurung (Ben J. & Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Psychology & Human Development) published an article on Psychology Today, criticizing societal clothing rules imposed on women. Gurung argues that women who dress in accordance with society’s codes, are presumed more intelligent and powerful and contribute positively to a company’s image. According to Gurung, women who do not follow dress codes set by the society or workplace are subject to judgement and prejudice, whereas men are less likely to be discriminated against solely based on inappropriate clothing. Gurung concludes that rather than focusing on women’s clothing, we must turn our attention to those discriminating or acting disrespectfully towards women who do not dress according to the standard.
