In the media: Jeffreys offers context for Butler story

NBC 26 turned to Associate Prof. Derek Jeffreys, Humanistic Studies and religion, for context on a Wednesday (May 2) story involving a former Packer and a canceled speaking engagement at a Wisconsin church. Leroy Butler this week tweeted his support for NBA player Jason Collins, the first current league player to come out as gay. As a result, an unidentified Wisconsin church canceled Butler’s speaking engagement, telling him they wouldn’t reinstate it unless he removes the tweet. Butler has refused. The turn of events isn’t surprising given the varying views churches hold, Jeffreys said. “Some churches take a literal approach to the bible, where they look for passages in the bible that condemn homosexuality,” Jeffreys said.
