Gallagher-Lepak earns $49,000 UW System grant for nursing diagnosis tool

Associate Prof. Susan Gallagher-Lepak, chair of UW-Green Bay’s Professional Program in Nursing, learned this week she is the recipient of a $49,169 Applied Research Grant from the UW-System. The award for 2014-15 supports further development of the
“Nursing Diagnosis Clinical Support Tool.” Gallagher-Lepak and researcher T. Heather Herdman of Nursing have collaborated on development of a tool that uses nursing diagnosis taxonomy set by NANDA International, a professional organization that seeks to standardize terminology and enhance professionalism and service across countries, cultures and specializations. The clinical support tool developed by the UW-Green Bay team is a mobile application for tablet or smart phone use.

The project was aided by previous funding through the WiSys program which promotes applied research and development; the new grant will support a distribution plan for the English-language version of the app along with creation of versions in Spanish and Portuguese. Gallagher-Lepak says she expects demand for the electronic, mobile tool to be strong not only in the United States but also in Asia and Latin America.
