Nelson, Furlong featured in NBC 26 story on preventing plagiarism
UW-Green Bay’s Leif Nelson and Scott Furlong talked about ways in which the University discourages and detects plagiarism and other cheating in an NBC 26 story that aired Monday (Feb. 18). The story looks at a sketchy website that offers to take tests and complete assignments for a student, for a fee. One way to prevent students from using such a service, LAS Dean Furlong said, is to create unique class assignments that require analysis instead of strictly recitation of facts. Nelson, manager of the Learning Technology Center, demonstrated Turnitin software, which some faculty members use to check for plagiarism, and discussed technological solutions to the problem. Reporter Heather Burke also spoke to a student, who gave her take on the importance of academic honesty. Full story.
