Semifinals in international voice competition

The ranks of competitors were pared Monday (Nov. 23) from more than 20 talented young singers to about half that, in preparation for the Tuesday semifinal round of the Czech/Slovak International Voice Competition. UW-Green Bay is the only U.S. site for the every-other-year competition, which promotes the Czech/Slovak vocal repertoire to young singers and encourages cultural exchange between North America and Eastern Europe. Here’s a reminder that the public is invited free of charge to observe the competition in the Jean Weidner Theatre of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Tuesday’s sessions are expected to run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. (Actually, it’s not much like the pop competition “American Idol,” but there is a similarity in that the judges winnow down a larger list, and only three competitors advance, in this case to Saturday’s finals in Montreal, Quebec.)
