Taking the temperature of weather forecast accuracy: next NAS seminar

Climatology expert Steven Meyer, associate professor of Natural and Applied Sciences, is featured speaker at the next NAS Seminar this Friday (April 19). His topic is “How Good are the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel Temperature Forecasts? Enquiring Minds Want to Know.” People often plan their day around anticipated weather conditions and sources such as the National Weather Service (7-day forecasts) and The Weather Channel (10-day forecasts). But how trustworthy are these forecasts? Meyer has been printing weather forecasts from these two sources on a daily basis for over six-and-a-half years (since 25 July 2006) and has examined the accuracy of their temperature forecasts from many different perspectives.

The April 19 seminar begins with a social at 3 p.m. in ES 317 and continues with the 3:30 p.m. presentation in ES 328.
