UW System, chancellors issue joint statement on civility

In response to several alleged incidents of violence and intolerance, UW System President Kevin Reilly and all 14 UW Chancellors have issued a joint statement calling for civility on campuses. “Acts of intolerance and violence happen across our nation,” the statement reads. “However, even one such instance is cause for alarm, especially at universities where we strive to provide safe, collegial learning and working environments.” The statement goes on to say, “Universities and colleges are uniquely positioned to address these thorny issues. Civil discourse is a cornerstone of democracy and a central tenet of academic freedom. Building on this tradition, we must set the stage for ‘civil behavior’ in all its forms.” To read the entire statement, visit Chancellor Thomas Harden’s website.
