The new Phoenix Optimist Club launched this year is off to a strong start. Jeanne Stangel of Intercollegiate Athletics says membership is mostly students but includes faculty and staff. The club was formed in spring 2009 and chartered with an impressive total of 37 members. The club is reorganizing this fall and is welcoming new members. The Phoenix Optimists held their first organizational meeting in September following Org Smorg and recruited an additional 15 new members. “The club’s focus is volunteer efforts to support various youth organizations in our community. A wonderful way to give back to local kids.” Current officers are Kalli Donaldson, president; Laura Bartingale and Morgan Weuve, co-vice presidents; and Jenn Meiselwitz, secretary/treasurer. The staff liaison is Stangel, associate athletics director. The club meets on Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m., in the Special Events Room at the Kress Events Center. For more information, contact Jeanne Stangel, email@example.com or 465-2053.
