Sweet talk Tuesday: Former NCAA president to speak at luncheon, lecture
Among the projects championed by Jeanne Stangel is the annual Power of the Purse event and the Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay. Stangel, president-elect of the organization, took a lead role in landing a powerhouse guest speaker for this week’s event: Judy Sweet. One of the first female D-1 athletics directors in America, and former head of the NCAA, Sweet will offer a free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 27) at the Fort Howard Theater in the Bemis Center at St. Norbert College. Stangel says this week’s Power of the Purse luncheon is already sold out, so Sweet’s evening talk, “From Tomboy to NCAA President: Lessons Learned,” is another great opportunity to hear her perspective on leadership, athletics and opportunities for young women.

Stangel said she is grateful that a number of UW-Green Bay faculty and staff support both the annual fundraiser and the Women’s Fund. Among them are current board member Prof. Kim Nielsen and former member Bev Carmichael, assistant chancellor for university advancement. Many others also contribute by purchasing tickets, placing bids on auction items and making donations to the fund. Money raised goes to local organizations — the fund has an endowment of nearly $1 million and makes grants to programs helping women return to school, raising the literacy rate of women and girls in poverty and guiding homeless women through self-esteem initiatives — more info at http://www.womensfundgb.org.
