LGBTQ resource center is new this fall

Plans are in the works to open an LGBTQ Resource Center in Room 153 of the University Union, near the Christie Theatre. The center is expected to serve as a resource for students, faculty and staff on LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) issues, and to promote better understanding of diverse communities.  Staff member Deborah J. Rezac, diversity director in the American Intercultural Center, says the center’s opening is timely in that it fits the Universitywide common theme for 2011-12, “Celebrating Differences: Creating Community.” She says the plan is to establish a “dream team” Advisory Council including strong student participation to shape and define the space.  The Advisory Council will also assist in developing critical campuswide relationships useful in sustaining the center in the early stages of its development. Rezac promises regular updates on LGBTQ Resource Center progress, and she also publically extends appreciation to University administration for its support, and to University Union management for identifying a physical space for the center.
