Fantastic flax: Gates, Sherman and team featured on state blog

UW-Green Bay’s flax project is attracting some statewide attention thanks to the Wisconsin Surface Design Association, an organization that promotes awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities and the general public. In May, Profs. Heidi Sherman (History) and Alison Gates (Art, Women’s and Gender Studies), along with students Alicia Engstrom and Travis Willer, planted a plot of flax seed on the plaza above the Student Services Building (flax is the plant from which linen is processed). The flax team has been working through the summer, and on Tuesday began the process of “retting,” an extensive soaking process that uses, in Gates’ words, “a highly innovative kiddie pool and garden hose method.” Sounds good to us.
