UW-Green Bay Public Safety offers fire prevention reminders
With warm weather here to stay, UW-Green Bay Public Safety reminds the campus community to practice fire safety with some helpful reminders to help us preserve and protect our beautiful campus resources:
- To prevent cigarettes from starting fires, always dispose of them in places where they cannot be a source of ignition. Placing a cigarette in a cup of water after use is a great way to prevent them from causing fires. Ashtrays work well too, but make sure they are contained and that the still-lit butt cannot blow towards a potential source of ignition. Never simply discard a cigarette on the ground or throw it out a car window.
- Do not smoke on hiking or biking trails because you never know where the ashes will land. Never throw smoking materials into the brush, leaves or grass.
- Never park any type of vehicle on dry vegetation; the heat from the exhaust can cause it to ignite.
- Never leave a fire unattended. Completely extinguish the fire—by dousing it with water and stirring the ashes until cold.
- When camping, take care when using and fueling lanterns, stoves, and heaters. Make sure lighting and heating devices are cool before refueling. Avoid spilling flammable liquids and store fuel away from appliances.
- Contact 911 or UW-Green Bay Public Safety 920-456-2300 if you notice an unattended or out-of-control fire.
