Ames, Iowa scholar visits for final NAS Seminar on Agriculture, greenhouse gas

Growing populations, bioenergy production goals, and climate change are all putting immense pressure on land and water resources to produce more food, fiber, and feedstock at a time of increasing concern about climate variability. Tom Sauer of the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, of Ames, Iowa, says a radical paradigm shift is necessary, and he’ll discuss examples of greenhouse gas emissions from different cropping systems as well as the soil organic carbon dynamics of alternative land uses.

Sauer will speak at 3:30 p.m. this Friday (May 3) in Room 328 of the Environmental Sciences Building in the final Natural and Applied Sciences Seminar of the semester. The title of his talk is “Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Agriculture: Science and Ethical Perspectives on How to Achieve Sustainable Intensification of Food, Fiber and Fuel.” The program is free and open to all, with a pre-talk social at 3 p.m. in ES 317.
