Apologies to Horst Stemke
We reported in a previous issue the exciting news that former UW-Green Bay soccer star Tosaint Ricketts started for Canada when that nation’s soccer team took on the United States in an internationally televised match earlier this week. In doing so, we repeated the assertion that “Ricketts was the first former Phoenix soccer player to make a national team squad…” That’s not quite true. Any longtime fan of UWGB soccer and the Phoenix Hall of Fame knows that Horst Stemke, Class of ’73, was a national-caliber player, as well. He started competing at the national level for the United States as early as 1968, and was on the U.S. Olympic team when it earned a bid to the 1972 Olympics tournament.
