UW-Green Bay Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble to perform holiday-themed concert

UW-Green Bay’s Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble are getting into the spirit of the season with a joint concert, titled “Holiday in Europe,” at an earlier, family friendly time — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 in the Cofrin Family (main) Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

This ninth UW-Green Bay Music concert of the 2012-13 season will begin with the Wind Ensemble performing the beloved Nutcracker Suite by Peter Tchaikovsky, including “Overture Miniature,” “Russian Dance-Trepak,” “Dance of the Toy Pipes” and the well-known “Waltz of the Flowers.” UW-Green Bay Director of Bands Kevin Collins will conduct.

After a brief intermission, the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will take the stage together, also conducted by Collins. The groups will perform Austrian works in the style of an Austrian New Year’s concert, with works including “Tritsch Tratsch Polka” and “Perpetuum Mobile,” both composed by Johann Strauss Jr., as well as “Clear Track Polka” by Eduard Strauss and the concluding “Radetzky March” by Johann Strauss Sr.

The Dec. 11 concert will take place an hour earlier than most UW-Green Bay Music performances, at a time designed to be more convenient for families, including those with younger children, Collins said. Young and old alike will enjoy this festive holiday performance.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors (please call 920-465-2400 or visit www.uwgb.edu/tickets). UW-Green Bay faculty and staff will be admitted at no charge (please contact the Chancellor’s Office to reserve tickets). Visit www.uwgb.edu/music for more information. UW-Green Bay is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
