UW-Green Bay to offer new course for online educators

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Division of Outreach and Adult Access will offer a new online course for educators designed to satisfy the educational requirements for teaching online.

The course, “Teaching and Learning in Online Environments,” will provide educators with experience as online learners and the skills necessary to meet the National Standards for Quality Online Teaching. Educators will also examine and experience differences in an online environment as compared to a face-to-face classroom.

One of the areas of emphasis in the course will be how to establish, encourage, and maintain communication as a critical component of online learning. Educators enrolled in the course will address ethical, practical and organizational issues as they plan and create their own online course.

The online course begins Feb. 7, 2011 and is available as a two-credit, eight-week course or a three-credit, ten-week course. It is not only open to educators teaching online courses in public schools but also to anyone who is considering teaching an online course at any level.

The course satisfies the following requirement for online educators:
“Beginning July 1, 2010, no person may teach an online course in a public school, including a charter school, unless he or she has completed at least 30 hours of professional development designed to prepare a teacher for online teaching” [Wisconsin State Statute 118.19(13)].

The deadline for registration is January 17, 2011. For more information call (920) 465-2480, (800) 621-2313, or visit www.uwgb.edu/educationoutreach.

The course is offered in partnership with PODetc, the Professional Online Development from the Educational Technology Community, a division of The Stephens Group.
