UW-Green Bay Celebrates Food Day

Keynote, expo and farm-to-table community dinner is free, open to public

GREEN BAY – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay welcomes organic farmer and educator Christine Welcher as the keynote speaker for its Food Day Celebration, Monday, Oct. 24 in the Phoenix Room of the University Union, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

The day’s events are sponsored by the UW-Green Bay Dietetics Club, Public and Environmental Affairs Council (PEAC), and Sustainable, Local, Organic (SLO) Food Alliance.

Welcher, a farm manager and educator at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in East Troy, Wis., will speak about the condition of farming in Wisconsin and how taking chances can lead to great outcomes. Her presentation is from 6 to 7 p.m., following a series of events that are free and open to the public. Welcher brings a passion for food and an understanding of the need to make quality, local, organic food more available and convenient for the average family. Her focus has been on value-added products. A locally sourced dessert and refreshments will be provided at 7 p.m.

Food Day is a nationally celebrated event which promotes healthy and sustainable food as well as improved food policies. October 24 provides a day to focus on solving food-related problems on the local, state and national levels. This annual event involves some of the country’s most prominent food activists, united by a vision of food that is healthy, affordable and produced with care for the environment, farm animals and the people who grow, harvest and serve it.

“The event is to spread awareness, educate and inspire campus and community attendees to move toward locally sourced whole food choices while supporting local farming,” said Alyssa Peters, marketing coordinator for the Dietetics Club.

Welcher’s talk follows a full day of Food Day activities followed by a locally sourced dessert and refreshment social at UW-Green Bay, all of which are free and open to the public. Other events include the following:

  • Presentations by local businesses, farmers and restaurants, 1-3 p.m.
  • Food, Health and Sustainability Expo, 3-6 p.m.
  • Free, farm-to-table community dinner, 5-6 p.m.
