UW-Green Bay Jazz Ensembles perform May 6

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay jazz ensembles will perform a variety of vocal and instrumental selections, Thursday, May 6 in the University Theatre in Theatre Hall.

Straightforward standards to Broadway melodies, to reworking of 1960’s pop hits, all get the jazz treatment for the performance of Jazz Ensembles I and II, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Combo. The concert is at 7:30 p.m.

Jazz Ensemble II under the direction of Assistant Prof. Adam Gaines will kick off the program with their take on the swing hit “Leap Frog” written by Joe Garland for Les Brown. Among the other selections will be “Inner View” by Tom Davis, and “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” by Eric Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin. That segment will conclude with Gaines and Associate Prof. John Salerno joining the Jazz Ensemble II on trumpet and saxophone for “Brotherhood of Man,” from the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble will take the stage next to perform five selections under the direction of adjunct instructor Chris Salerno. They’ll open their portion of the show with a rendition of Horace Silver’s “Cookin’ At the Continental,” which will feature Gaines and John Salerno on horns and each member of the vocal ensemble taking a solo turn. Other numbers being performed are: “My Little Suede Shoes” by Charlie Parker and Chris Salerno, “Besame Mucho” by Consuelo Velazquez and Chris Salerno, “Tangerine” by Johnny Mercer, Victor Schertzinger and Kirby Shaw, and “To Dare the Moon” by Daemon Meader, Sara Krieger and Caprice Fox.

Following a brief intermission, the Jazz Combo under the direction of John Salerno will perform Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee,” and Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa.” The arrangement for the latter is by Ben Hogan, who will play vibraphone.

The concert will conclude with five selections by the Jazz I Ensemble and Jazz Combo, under the direction of John Salerno. They’ll open with “Fanfare for Greg H” by Tim Walters, then swing into “Never My Love” a late 60s hit for The Association. Next on the program is “Have You Met Miss Jones” from the musical comedy I’d Rather Be Right by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The mood will move to the Caribbean when the Jazz Ensemble takes a turn on Arturo Sandoval’s “Caribeno.” The evening will conclude with “Eye of the Hurricane” by Herbie Hancock.

This is the 33rd concert of the 2009-2010 season.
