UW-Green Bay to host April 19 ‘Create-a-Thon’ to celebrate campus Common Theme

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present its first ever Create-a-Thon event Friday, April 19, celebrating the campus Common Theme of “Creativity, Innovation & Vision” with a day of music, art, improvisation and more.

The Create-a-Thon will run from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the Phoenix Club of the University Union on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Digital projections of faculty and student art will be featured throughout most of the day, with art activities including drawing, painting and creation of a freeform knitting/crocheting project running straight through until the event’s conclusion at 8 p.m. Participants also can join in a whiteboard art project inspired by artist, designer and urban planner Candy Chang, who spoke on campus last semester as part of a Common Theme event.

Highlights of the Create-a-Thon also will include a performance of “In C,” a composition that can accommodate any number of people in a semi-improvised score. Individuals who are interested in performing are invited to join UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Adam Gaines in the University’s Band Room (Studio Arts Building) at 2:15 p.m. for a meeting and rehearsal. The performance will take place from 3:15-4 p.m. in the Phoenix Club. Other Create-a-Thon activities include:

• Student composition showcase, featuring students of Assistant Prof. Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, 11-11:30 a.m.
• UW-Green Bay Jazz ensembles performance, 12:45-2 p.m.
• UW-Green Bay Music student convocation, 2:15-3 p.m.
• Unveiling of Prof. Christine Style’s new “little library,” 3 p.m.
• Alumni Saxophone Quartet performs, 5-5:45 p.m.

Additional performances and other events may be added into the evening. The Create-a-Thon concludes at 8 p.m.
The yearlong Common Theme program at UW-Green Bay involves students, faculty, staff and community in a focused dialogue about a specific issue or area of study. It engages participants in the ideals of a liberal arts education and UW-Green Bay’s interdisciplinary mission, encouraging exploration of the theme from multiple perspectives.

The Common Theme for 2013-14 will be “Global Citizenship in an Evolving World,” an exploration of how globalization has triggered a range of social, cultural, political, environmental and economic changes throughout the world — and how virtually all fields of study and industries now are impacted by global issues.
