UW-Green Bay offers Spanish Immersion for Professionals summer course

Necesita usted aprender Español?

Do you need to learn Spanish? The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Spanish Immersion for Professionals program can help.

Scheduled for Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15, at UW-Green Bay, the program will provide an intensive language-learning experience for all levels of Spanish language learners. Registration is due by Monday, July 28.

The Spanish Immersion for Professionals program is designed for professionals such as customer service representatives, call center employees, hospitality workers, social workers, bankers, teachers and health care workers. Along with instruction in language and grammar, courses tailored to health care, education, business, law and travel and leisure will be offered. A substantial online resource component will be part of this program. Students will learn in UW-Green Bay’s high-tech classrooms and will enjoy meals in the University Union facilities.

Students will participate in language classes broken down by skill level. Some English will be spoken in beginner classes, while intermediate and advanced class instruction will be entirely in Spanish. An online pretest will determine a student’s skill level.

Each class day will end with a session on culture and current affairs in the Spanish-speaking world. In late afternoon and evening, participants can choose to join conversation tables hosted by native Spanish speakers, and practice with each other during dinner.

Curricular director and instructor Associate Prof. Cristina Ortiz, along with community instructors Amelia Canilho of Sturgeon Bay and Karla Weibel of Green Bay will provide instruction at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Fees for the program are $420 for noncredit instruction; $675 for two undergraduate credits in Spanish; and $1,050 for two graduate credits in Education. The fees for all three include instruction, beverages during breaks and lunch each day. For out-of-town participants, an array of hotel options are available in close proximity to campus. (See the program’s website for more details.)
