UW-Green Bay Middle School Music Camp registration now under way

Students entering grades 6 through 9 in fall 2015 can enroll now for Middle School Band, Orchestra, Choral and Piano Camp July 12-17 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Several camp options are tailored to middle school students. Band students entering grades 6 and 7 will participate in “X-Band,” the camp’s beginner band that will focus on fundamentals for the young musician. Students will not need to audition for this band and will be taught by a team of teachers who specialize in working with young musicians.

Band students entering grades 8 and 9, as well as all choral and orchestral students entering grades 7-9, will audition for placement in their performing groups.

Camp teachers will include music faculty members from UW-Green Bay and other colleges and universities, along with outstanding Wisconsin music teachers. See the camp website for faculty/staff updates: www.uwgb.edu/camps/music/middleSchoolBand.

Students’ days will be filled with rehearsals, a masterclass, sectionals and two “option” hours. An array of class choices are offered, including the following: Flute Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Instrumental Jazz Improvisation, Hand Drumming, Digital Sound Processing/Production, Introduction to Music Theory, Musical Theatre, Clarinet Ensemble, Pop Strings and Fiddling, Live Recording Techniques, Saxophone Ensemble, Beginning Class Piano, Camp Chorus, and Percussion Ensemble.

New this year, Piano Camp! Join us in this immersive experience designed to inspire young musicians and help them reach a higher level in keyboard study. Classes focus on piano repertoire, music theory, and ensemble playing. Students will receive individual instruction from artist-faculty, and masterclasses and recitals provide ample performance opportunities. Piano students will join band, orchestra, and choir campers in 3rd and 7th hour electives.

The camp week gets under way Sunday, July 12 with auditions for orchestra and choral students and for band students entering grades 8 and 9. The camp ends with a 6 p.m. concert Friday, July 17 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on campus. Outstanding students will be chosen to receive partial scholarships to the 2016 camp.

Students can attend as commuters or as residents living in UW-Green Bay student housing. The camp fee is $295 for commuters, which includes lunch. The resident students fee is $569, which includes instruction, room and board, counselor supervision, a t-shirt and transportation to evening activities. Students must be 12 years of age to stay overnight on campus.
