UW-Green Bay issues additional call for input on Shorewood Golf Course plan

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is issuing an additional call for feedback on a proposed landscape plan for the Shorewood Golf Course on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Members of the public are invited to weigh in via email (shorewood@uwgb.edu) no later than Friday, Jan. 20, and a decision is expected by the end of the month.

University officials have held a series of open meetings on the Shorewood Tree Management Plan and Winter 2012 project, which would include selective removal of approximately 180 of more than 1,600 trees on the property. The project’s goals include improving the golfing experience; reducing maintenance and cleanup; increasing efficiency in mowing rough areas; extending tee boxes on holes #3, #7 and #8; addressing known safety issues and concerns; and providing an opportunity to plant new native species within the forested areas of the course. In addition to feedback, questions also can be emailed to shorewood@uwgb.edu.

About 50 individuals, including Shorewood golfers, course personnel and UW-Green Bay facilities and natural-areas experts, have weighed in on the project during four open sessions thus far, said Shorewood Golf Course Director Rick Warpinski. Officials have held course walking tours and related presentations on the plan. Trees have been marked for removal using the following criteria:

  • High-risk — generally means trees are damaged, rotting internally or leaning significantly.
  • Suppressed — trees are the same age as nearby trees of the same age, yet growth is not as strong.
  • Opportunity — relates to plans to extend tee boxes or make other course improvements.
  • Thinning out — trees are located in dense or unplayable areas; removal would reduce leaf and stick debris and ease mowing.
  • Replanting — removal will allow space with sufficient light to replant new trees for future generations.

UW-Green Bay has retained Crivitz-based Trees & Trails Forestry Consultants, LLC to assist with the scope, scale and administration of the Shorewood project, and only Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) loggers were solicited and would be retained for its completion. More information about the company and the SFI are available at the following websites:

Work on the project, if approved, may be done this winter if conditions allow.
