International Film Series continues Feb. 5 with ‘Salt of the Earth’

The International Film Series co-sponsored by UW-Green Bay continues on Feb. 5, 2020. Screenings are at 7 p.m. every other Wednesday at the Neville Public Museum. All films are free and open to the public and are unrated, but intended for a mature audience. Current and former faculty and staff are among those serving as presenter/hosts.

The first film, Salt of the Earth (USA, 1954), is on Feb. 5. The film follows Mexican-American workers protest about unsafe work conditions and unequal wages at New Mexico’s Empire Zinc mine, compared to their Anglo counterparts. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but he is shown to be a hypocrite by treating his pregnant wife, Esperanza, with a similar unfairness. When an injunction stops the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home. This film is being presented by UW-Green Bay Prof. Jon Shelton (History).

The next film in this series, Endless Letterpress (Argentina, 2019), is on Feb. 19. This documentary film focuses on a group of young people who rediscover the greatest technical innovation in the history of the written word, the typesetting press, in the midst of a world where printing presses are closing their workshops in the face of advancement in new technology. This documentary film is being presented by Jim Moran from the Hamilton Woodtype Museum.
