UW-Green Bay receives state grant to help gain national research status for bay | WLUK

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — UW-Green Bay is receiving a boost in its effort to designate the Bay of Green Bay as a national research site.On Thursday afternoon, the state provided nearly $49,788 to help in the process. There are 29 National Estuarine Research Reserve sites in the country. They are also called NERR sites. The only NERR sites on the Great Lakes are in Ohio and on Lake Superior in Wisconsin. That designation would help UWGB bring in more than $1 million per year for water-focused scientific research, education, stewardship and training, according to the school.“

A designation of this kind will bring both national and Great Lakes and international attention to the region and to our waterways,” said Emily Tyner, UW-Green Bay Director of Freshwater Strategy. “That is from researchers, education professionals, conservationists, who will come and learn from our ongoing efforts and the tremendous restoration work already happening.”
