Furlong featured in Post-Crescent story on grad gender gap

The Post-Crescent of Appleton on Tuesday (Dec. 20) ran a story examining what’s often termed the “gender gap” in higher education graduation rates. The story notes that graduation rates across the UW System are consistently higher for women, with 62 percent of women who entered the System in 2004 having graduated by 2010, compared with 58 percent of their male counterparts. Our own Debbie Furlong provided some context for the numbers here — in 2011, UW-Green Bay graduated 837 women, which is more than double the number of men. Women slightly outpaced men in terms of graduation rate (the University’s student body is about 2/3 female), but factors such as program array and a safe campus mean women are more likely to stay and graduate.
