Faculty note: Prof. Hutchison presentation

Prof. Ray Hutchison (Public and Environmental Affairs) was in Krakow June 28 to July 1 to attend the annual meeting of the European Sociological Association. He presented a paper, “Hidden Spaces,” with examples from Florence (ex. Where is the convent where Galileo’s daughter Maria Celeste lived? Did the Medici destroy the Palazzo Piti in retribution for the plot that killed Lorenzo’s brother?) and from Chicago (ex: Where is the location of Turner Hall, where the police dispersed a peaceful political meeting during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877? And where was the Battle of the Viaduct, where dozens of peaceful protesters where shot by troops during the strike?) He also chaired a session on social segregation and marginalization in urban public spaces and was a participant in the closing session for the conference, appearing along with Carlos Fortuna (University of Coimbra), Laura Bovone (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – Milano) and Krzysztof Frysztacki (Jagiellonian University).
