UW-Green Bay presents Grandparents’ University® for summer 2012

Grandparents and their grandchildren between the ages of 7 and 14 can share their love of learning at the two-day Grandparents’ University summer camp at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. At one of 13 Grandparents Universities in the country, UW-Green Bay participants will enjoy the camaraderie of other families, quality time with grandchildren and learning together. Many families make this event their annual reunion for the young cousins each year.

Grandparents’ University takes places Thursday, July 12 and Friday, July 13, offering a unique opportunity for grandparents and their grandchildren to explore together topics of interest and enjoy summer activities on the scenic bayshore campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Grandparents’ University offers 11 courses from which to choose. Class selections and their instructors include:

Animals on the Wild Side, In Nature and the Museum — Instructor: Thomas Erdman, Curator, Richter Museum of Natural History; Cofrin Center for Biodiversity

Nutritional Science — Instructor: Karen Lacey, MS, RD, CD; senior lecturer, Human Biology; past director of Dietetic Programs

Memory-Making Clay Designs — Instructor: Dean Hoegger, artist/teacher

You’re the Artist: Learn How to Draw Cartoon Characters! — Instructor: Addie Sorbo, lecturer, artist, teacher

Artist Books: Visual Journeys — Instructor: Chris Style, professor of Arts and Visual Design

4-Hand Piano — Instructor: David Severtson, assistant professor of Music

Music Composition and Rhythm — Instructor: Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, assistant professor of Music

Songwriting — Instructor: Chris Salerno, Vocal Jazz Studies, adjunct instructor of Music

Geology — Instructor: John Luczaj, associate professor of Natural and Applied Sciences

Meteorology — Instructor: Steve Meyer, associate professor of Natural and Applied Sciences

Hands-on Rocketry — Daniel Bateman, Spaceport, Sheboygan

Registration for Grandparents’ University continues through June 21 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, and the program ends at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, following a graduation ceremony.

The fee for Grandparents’ University is $189 per adult and child pair. The fee includes instruction, activities, a cookout on Thursday night, parking and a t-shirt. Each additional adult is $125 and each additional child is $75.

Grandparents’ University attendees may commute or choose to stay in UW-Green Bay student suite apartments.
