UW System to set UW-Green Bay tuition hike at 5.5 percent

Annual tuition and student fees will climb to just under $7,000 this fall for a Wisconsin resident attending UW-Green Bay full time, according to a proposal awaiting approval this week.

The UW System Board of Regents will set 2010-11 tuition rates for each of the System’s 13 four-year campuses at a meeting Friday (June 11) in Milwaukee.

President Kevin P. Reilly announced today he will ask the Board to approve tuition increases of 5.5 percent for most of the System’s students. It will be the fourth consecutive year with a 5.5 percent increase to the tuition portion of the bill.

If UW Regents approve tuition levels as proposed today, the “total” at UW-Green Bay— tuition plus segregated fees, which are set at the campus level — will be $6,977 for a Wisconsin resident attending full time for the full 2010-11 academic year. That breaks down to $5,659 for tuition and $1,318 for student fees. The combined number compares to last year’s $6,614 annual bill at UW-Green Bay.

“(The UW System) has worked hard in recent years to keep tuition increases reasonable and predictable,” said Reilly, who listed affordable access as a key goal. “In the face of major financial challenges, we have successfully avoided double‐digit tuition increases, across‐the‐board enrollment caps, and other drastic measures.”

In the second year of a tough state budget, the UW System continues to implement $255 million in mandatory funding cuts and reallocations. Additional tuition revenues will help address a portion of that shortfall, but furloughs for faculty and staff will continue for another year, and all UW institutions are managing funding reductions to a wide range of academic programs, student support services, research projects, and community outreach programs.
