UW-Green Bay faculty trumpet recital
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay music program will present a faculty recital, Saturday, Sept. 25, featuring trumpet player Adam Gaines. He will be joined by pianist David Severtson, horn player Michelle McQuade Dewhirst and trombone player Kevin Collins.
The free recital will be at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Howard Hall of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts and is open to the public.
The recital will feature classical pieces including: “Abblasen” by Gottfried Reiche, “Voluntary No. 1” by William Boyce, “Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone” by Francis Poulenc, “Sonata #9 in C major, Op.103” by Sergei Prokofiev, and “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” by Halsey Stevens.
“These pieces are all very classical and refined, and offer me the chance to show my students that I practice what I preach in lessons all the time,” Gaines said. “I play a lot of jazz, but these kind of classical works are still very near and dear to my heart.”
Gaines is an assistant professor of trumpet and jazz at UW-Green Bay. In addition to teaching the trumpet studio, Gaines directs the Jazz Ensemble II and the New Music Ensemble, and teaches Jazz History and Brass Techniques. A native of Kentucky, Prof. Gaines has performed as a soloist throughout Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals in Europe. His work goes beyond playing the trumpet into the realm of arranging and composition.
Severtson is an assistant professor coordinating the UW-Green Bay piano program. He teaches studio piano lessons, keyboard musicianship, first-year ear training and Survey of Western Music. Before arriving at UW-Green Bay he taught at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
McQuade Dewhirst is an assistant professor of music at UW-Green Bay. She received her bachelor’s degree in horn performance from Ithaca College and earned her doctorate in music composition at the University of Chicago. She teaches music theory, music history and horn lessons.
Collins, a UW-Green Bay faculty member since 1988, was appointed director of bands in 1995. He currently serves as chair of the Music program. Collins directs the UW-Green Bay Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, and teaches conducting and studio low brass. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from the University of Texas-Austin, and has done additional study in instrumental conducting at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
