Clarinetist kicks off UW-Green Bay fall faculty recitals

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay music program will present a faculty recital Saturday, Sept. 10, featuring clarinet player Eric Hansen. He will be joined by pianist David Severtson.

The free recital is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. in the Jean Weidner Theatre of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

The recital will feature pieces including “Five Bagatelles, Op. 23” by Gerald Finzi; “Sonata in Eb Major Op. 120 No. 2” by Johannes Brahms; “Hommage á J.S. Bach” by Béla Kovács; “Time Pieces, Op. 43” by Robert Muczynski and “Carnevale Di Venezia” by G. Salieri.

“This recital gives me an opportunity to share a variety of quality works for clarinet and piano,” Hansen said. “I’m looking forward to this performance because regardless of musical taste, I think all audience members will find something they can enjoy. The final piece is very flashy and rather humorous; it takes a catchy theme and transforms it through many variations of increasing technical difficulty.”

Hansen is an assistant professor of music at UW-Green Bay. He teaches clarinet, music theory, woodwind techniques and woodwind ensemble, and directs the Phoenix Pep Band. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and two bachelor’s degrees in music education and music performance from Arizona State University.

Severtson is an assistant professor coordinating the UW-Green Bay piano program. He teaches studio piano lessons, keyboard musicianship, first-year ear training and survey of western music. Before arriving at UW-Green Bay he taught at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
