UW-Green Bay presents gala-style Opera and Music Theatre Workshop performance

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present an Opera and Music Theatre Workshop performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

The culmination of a UW-Green Bay Music course, this special evening of music will include 14 students performing a variety of works ranging from musical theatre favorites to light opera. Presented in the style of a gala concert, the event will feature students dressed in formal performance attire singing, with pianist Emily Sculliuffo accompanying. Refreshments including iced tea and desserts will be served.

UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Sarah Meredith Livingston teaches the course — alternating years with Assistant Prof. Courtney Sherman — and has helped students prepare for their evening in the spotlight. The usually simple performance event is a bit more elaborate in terms of dress and presentation this year, Meredith Livingston said. Mark Anderson, owner of Stun Photography, has taken 8”x10” black-and-white photographs of the performers to add to the professional atmosphere.

“The gala concert style is very popular, and is common at fundraising events around the country,” Meredith Livingston said. “Instead of putting on a full opera, which is very costly … this type of event allows students to perform excerpts from different shows in an elegant, enjoyable setting.”

Tickets for the May 1 event are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Call (920) 465-2400 or visit www.uwgb.edu/tickets. For more information, visit www.uwgb.edu/music. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music, is located at 2420 Nicolet Drive.
