Children in need to benefit from 'Laffle 4,' starting Oct. 31

laffle 4The good people in the Registrar’s Office are soon to launch “Laffle 4,” the latest in their fun series of charity drives in which UW-Green Bay pitches in to support a particular cause or segment of the community.

This fall’s drive begins Monday (Oct. 31). For the second consecutive fall, donation will go to the “pair and a spare” campaign to direct much-needed items to local schoolchildren.

The concept is that, when purchasing clothes or school and hygiene items for children you know, you will remember that social workers in the Green Bay public schools report many disadvantaged children are doing without. Welcome items would include new socks, t-shirts, undergarments, hats, mittens, scarves, gym shorts, gym shoes, sweatpants and sweatshirts. This is a K-12 effort, so just about any size or color will work, although no questionable logos, please. All items will be given directly to the social workers in each school for distribution as needed.  Other personal care items will also be accepted.  Cash donations will be accepted, as well, with organizers purchasing the items and returning a receipts to the donors for their records.

(If you’re new to campus and wondering what a “laffle” is… well… it brings a fun element to a combination raffle and charity drive. The organizers collect donations, then offer donors a ticket for a closing drawing, and then hand out donated prizes both gag-gift funny and seriously impressive at the end. That’s a “laffle.”)

Donors of prizes to Laffle 4 will also receive drawing tickets. Also, this being fall in Wisconsin, show proof of donating a deer, turkey or other game item to Paul’s Pantry and you will receive additional tickets for your donation. The stubs will be placed in the Laffle Box for a prize drawing at the drive’s conclusion.

If individuals or groups would like to donate a prize they can either call ext. 2126 or drop it off at the Registrar’s Office. As for dropping off donated items for the children, staff member Eileen Kolb says dropoffs are welcome but Registrar’s staff will be venturing out for pickups (each Wednesday, this time) if offices have multiple donations. Call ext. 2126 or contact Eileen at KolbE@uwgb.edu with any questions.

The drive wraps up with the drawing (more details later) on Monday, Nov. 21.
