New Arts Enrichment for Adults program offered at UW-Green Bay
GREEN BAY — Arts Enrichments for Adults, a new non-credit program offered at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is aimed at helping adults capture their creative side. The class will take place 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3-6, on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Dr.
Students can choose from a variety of classes offered.
Millefiori, an Italian word meaning “one thousand flowers,” is a technique that has long been used to create complex patterns in glass. Students will learn this technique in the Magic of Millefiori class, taught by Joyce Fritz. Students will use polymer clay to make simple canes and later combine them into more complex patterns. These patterned pieces will be used to create jewelry or other decorative objects. Fritz has been a working studio artist since graduating from UW-Green Bay in 1984 and has been working in polymer clay for the last 20 years.
Introduction to Acrylic Painting with Arda Ishkhanian will focus on transferring emotions, moods, tensions and tranquility onto the canvas. Students will learn a variety of acrylic painting techniques, including working with brush and/or spatula, glazing, impasto and collage. Simple exercises will help spark the imagination and deepen the understanding of texture, shape, form and interesting imagery.
Ishkhanian is of Armenian origin, born in Egypt, and attended high school in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1979, she immigrated to America and attended California College of Arts, where she received her BFA in Film and Video. As an art teacher, Ishkhanian encourages her students to embark on a life long journey of exploring and appreciating art.
Introduction to Digital Photography will teach students a variety of skills associated with digital photography. Students will use their own digital camera to explore basic camera operation, composition, editing and printing images. Assignments will include nature, portraits and architecture. Instructor Vicky Molitor, a practicing artist and high school art teacher in Manitowoc, earned her master’s degree in Visual Studies at Cardinal Stritch University.
From Junk to Jewelry will transform cast-off objects into wearable art with jewelry instructor Erica Becker. Students will be introduced to the basics of jewelry making and will learn sawing, riveting and shouldering. Becker is an artist and art educator in the Green Bay area. She has a bachelor of fine arts degree with teacher certification from UW-Whitewater with an emphasis in drawing and ceramics.
The Basics of Drawing with Sara Tlachac will help make anyone an artist. Students will create images using pencil, pastels and charcoal. With Tlachac, students learn and develop drawing skills through gesture drawing, shading and the use of grid method to render images in proportion. Tlachac works as a fine artist at The Art Garage along with working as an art teacher in the Green Bay Area Public Schools where she has been employed for the past eight years.
Sandra Shackelford is the Arts Enrichment Coordinator for the program. Shackelford is a documentary artist whose work is in collections throughout the U.S. She earned a degree from UW-Green Bay and studied at UW-Milwaukee. Shackelford works with K-12 students at Aldo Leopold School and creates art programs for youth through the Howe Neighborhood Family Resource Center, both in Green Bay.
The class fee of $119 covers instruction. Some classes requiring special materials also have a lab fee.
