Retirees say UW System budget cuts ‘will leave permanent scars’

On behalf of the 200-plus-member UW-Green Bay Retiree Association, president and former professor James Wiersma has written a letter to the editor opposing Gov. Walker’s budget and its “devastating cuts” for the UW System. “Faculty and staff at UW-Green Bay in the past have worked hard to establish a highly recognized university. This level of dedication is now carried on by current faculty and staff. We believe it is unwise to weaken, and in some cases eliminate, programs that have such great momentum and have such an important economic impact in our region and state.” He concludes by writing, “The magnitude of these proposed cuts is short-sighted and will leave permanent scars in all campuses of our precious UW System.” See the full text.

UW-Green Bay Retirees Annual Dinner

Former faculty and staff of UW-Green Bay gathered together at the University Union in October for the Retiree Association Annual Dinner. There was plenty of storytelling and reminiscing, but also plenty of discussion centering on current-day UW-Green Bay. The Association also remains actively engaged in supporting the University through advocacy, advisory assistance and scholarship fundraising. The evening’s guest speaker was a prominent UW-Green Bay alumnus, Distinguished Alumni Award winner Steve Taylor, a 1979 Business Administration graduate.

2014 Retiree Association Annual Scholarship Golf Outing

top-retiree
It was another beautiful day for the fourth annual UW-Green Bay Retiree Association Benefit Golf Outing on August 15, 2014. Nearly 40 golfers and dinner guests – including alumni, current employees, and friends of the University – joined retired UW-Green Bay faculty and staff at Shorewood Golf course in order to have fun and raise funds for the UW-Green Bay Retiree Association Endowed Scholarship. The benefit netted more than $800 for the scholarship, which currently supports one student per year at the $700 level. By adding to the fund, the Retirees hope to be able to help students at a greater level each year.

The Retiree Association would like to thank the donors to the golf outing who, through their contributions, helped the Association with its goal for this event: The Phoenix Bookstore, Pump Room, Royal Scot Golf Course, Shorewood Golf Course, UW-Green Bay Alumni Association, UW-Green Bay Athletics, Wells Fargo Advisors and The Woods Golf Course.

Rockin’ retirees: New photo gallery has snaps from annual dinner

A little late but worth the wait, we’ve got a great photo gallery from October’s annual UW-Green Bay retirees dinner. This good-looking and experienced crowed gathered in the Phoenix Rooms for a social hour and buffet dinner, election of new board members, remarks from Association members, an address from women’s basketball Coach Kevin Borseth and more. Retirees also checked out displays of UW-Green Bay historic materials (thanks, University Archives!) and received an update on the ongoing Oral History Interview Project. We’ve got more info and some great pics, click here.
