Reminder: Room for more at Retiree Association outing

The 5th Annual UW-Green Bay Retiree Association Benefit Golf Outing will be held at the Shorewood Golf Course Thursday, Aug. 13. Proceeds benefit the Retiree Association Scholarship. Retired UW-Green Bay faculty and staff are hosting the event, but everyone is welcome to play, and non-golfers are welcome to join the picnic-style buffet and post-golf festivities. Register by Friday, Aug. 7. Visit the website.

Another year, another Convocation Open… this year’s is Aug. 27

They’re billing it as the “4th Annual UWGB Convocation Open” (some call it Divotfest) to be held the day after convocation on Thursday, Aug. 27 at the Shorewood Golf Course, and it is fun. The format for this social outing is a three-or-four person scramble that allows golfers of all abilities to participate and meet others in an informal setting. The event is open to faculty, staff, and retirees, with the teams being selected by the Planning Committee, chaired by Steve Meyer along with Joe Schoenebeck and John Katers. Chancellor Miller has once again been invited to hit the ceremonial first ball at 1 p.m., with tee times to follow. (If the Chancellor is unavailable, organizers are trying to get Brett Favre, who seems to be everywhere around Green Bay, these days.) Anyway, what better way to prepare for the upcoming semester by taking a half day of vacation and commiserating with others while enjoying a round of golf for $10 ($15 if taking a cart)? Please contact Joe Schoenebeck by Friday, Aug. 21, to reserve your spot in the outing. Non-golfers are encouraged to stop by later in the afternoon for refreshments and conversation.

2014 Retiree Association Annual Scholarship Golf Outing

top-retiree
It was another beautiful day for the fourth annual UW-Green Bay Retiree Association Benefit Golf Outing on August 15, 2014. Nearly 40 golfers and dinner guests – including alumni, current employees, and friends of the University – joined retired UW-Green Bay faculty and staff at Shorewood Golf course in order to have fun and raise funds for the UW-Green Bay Retiree Association Endowed Scholarship. The benefit netted more than $800 for the scholarship, which currently supports one student per year at the $700 level. By adding to the fund, the Retirees hope to be able to help students at a greater level each year.

The Retiree Association would like to thank the donors to the golf outing who, through their contributions, helped the Association with its goal for this event: The Phoenix Bookstore, Pump Room, Royal Scot Golf Course, Shorewood Golf Course, UW-Green Bay Alumni Association, UW-Green Bay Athletics, Wells Fargo Advisors and The Woods Golf Course.

Convocation Open has spots available

Our faculty and staff colleagues organizing the Shorewood golf outing for the afternoon of Aug. 28, the day after Convocation, say they’ve had a good number of early signups, but there’s always room for more. The event is open to faculty, staff and retirees. The planning committee consists of Kelly Franz, John Katers and Joe Schoenebeck. Please contact Joe if you’d like to reserve a spot for the very reasonable $10 greens fee. Non-golfers are welcome, as well. For details, see our previous post.

New UW-Green Bay Chancellor Gary L. Miller made one of his first public appearances Aug. 4 at the annual men’s basketball golf outing at Thornberry Creek. Miller (second from left, here) rubbed elbows and traded golf stories with hoops fans and longtime program supporters including former UW-Green Bay associate chancellor Donald Harden (at left), who helped lead the University’s transition to NCAA Division I in the 1980s. The event also included a dinner and brief program hosted by local broadcaster John Maino and featuring remarks by Miller, Coach Brian Wardle and Athletics Director Mary Ellen Gillespie. The fundraiser yielded nearly $75,000 for Green Bay Athletics.
