UW-Green Bay to host mid-year Commencement, with record class, Dec. 15

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is poised to graduate a record mid-year class during Commencement ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 4, approximately 460 students are eligible to graduate, more than 330 of whom plan to participate in mid-year Commencement exercises. One year ago, 445 students applied for graduation, up from just more than 400 the year before. May commencements also have set records in recent years; and in May 2012, UW-Green Bay graduated its 30,000th alumnus.

UW-Green Bay’s mid-year Commencement speaker is 1974 graduate Frederick J. Heide, an associate professor with the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco.

An award-winning educator who has published and presented widely on psychology related issues, Heide — better known in Wisconsin as Fred “Doc” Heide — is the creative force behind nearly two dozen musical theatre productions. He is co-founder, founding board president, artistic adviser, playwright and performer with American Folklore Theatre in Door County. Heide is a graduate of Green Bay East High School.

Graduating senior Lauren Caruso will be the student speaker for mid-year Commencement, on the day she receives her bachelor’s degree with summa cum laude (highest) honors. Caruso carries a double major in Spanish and Human Biology (with a health sciences emphasis) and a minor in Chemistry. She is an award-winning student athlete who captained the UW-Green Bay women’s swimming and diving team while maintaining a near-perfect grade-point average and earning All-Horizon League academic honors. Caruso plans to pursue additional studies and eventually a career in pharmacy.

UW-Green Bay will recognize award-winning graduates during a Friday, Dec. 14 ceremony on campus. Among the honorees is senior Wendy Huber, who will accept the December 2012 Outstanding Student Award, as presented by the University’s Alumni Association. A Theatre major and Human Development minor, Huber will receive her degree with magna cum laude (high) honors. During her UW-Green Bay career, Huber has been the recipient of multiple scholarships and academic honors, including the Outstanding Theatre Student Award and the Excellence in Production Award. She has been widely involved in the community and spent a year in service as an AmeriCorps volunteer.
