UW-Green Bay presents one-day conference on disaster recovery
The UW-Green Bay Division of Outreach and Adult Access will present a daylong conference on disaster recovery Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 2040 Airport Drive, Green Bay.
“Rebuilding Your Community After a Disaster: A Whole Community Approach” is a conference designed for public and private sector professionals who want to learn the latest trends in successful disaster recovery. The government-centric approach has proven to not meet the challenges posed by catastrophic events. The “Whole Community” approach reinforces the idea that no one organization has the strengths, capabilities and competencies to successfully respond. “Whole Community” emphasizes the involvement of partners at the federal, state and local levels plus tribal and nongovernmental organizations, nonprofit groups, private sector industry, individuals, families and the community.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Todd Prafke, city administrator for St. Peter, Minn., presenting “The Day St. Peter was Destroyed and the Path to Recovery.” He will speak about the March 1998 tornado that tore through the southern Minnesota community, killing one person, injuring many and damaging more than 1,700 homes. Prafke will share how the community recovered, rebuilt and learned the most important lesson — working together.
The disaster recovery conference runs from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (with registration from 7:30-8:30 a.m.) on Thursday, Dec. 4.
