UW-Green Bay to host Chancellor’s Veteran Reception Nov. 9

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host its annual Chancellor’s Veteran Reception at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in the Phoenix Room of the University Union on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

The annual event is a chance to honor campus and community veterans and active-duty personnel, all of whom are invited to attend, said UW-Green Bay veteran services adviser Elaina Koltz. Refreshments will be served.

The reception will include remarks from UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden, as well as veteran Jeremy Wildenberg, a UW-Green Bay graduate student, instructor and Institute for Learning Partnership staff member. Wildenberg served 14 years in the military as a linguist and intelligence analyst, including deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is a full-time UW-Green Bay student in the Applied Leadership in Teaching and Learning master’s degree program, and he teaches Arabic for UW-Green Bay through the University of Wisconsin’s Collaborative Language Program. Wildenberg also teaches Arabic and Russian for St. Norbert College. He is the father of four children, ages seven to 17.

UW-Green Bay has 355 individuals receiving veteran benefits, including 252 veterans and service members, as well as dependents. That number is expected to increase to more than 400 by early next year, Koltz said. UW-Green Bay recently was named a Military Friendly School for the fourth consecutive year, an honor bestowed by Victory Media Inc. that recognizes the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that do the most to embrace military service members, veterans and spouses as students, and to ensure their success on campus.

“UW-Green Bay works to serve and honor our veterans and military service members year-round, including through this very special Chancellor’s Veteran Reception,” Koltz said. “When the appreciation for their sacrifice and hard work comes from the top of the University, it makes a wonderful impression on these students.”

Several items will be on display during the veteran reception event, including UW-Green Bay student military scrapbooks and photo albums. The University also will display books from the Veterans Book Project, a library of books authored collectively by artist Monica Haller and dozens of people who have been affected by and have archives of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Visit the Book Project website for more information.

UW-Green Bay’s Vets 4 Vets Club will be collecting items for veteran care packages, and will host a raffle to benefit the purchase of veteran books. For information about veterans’ benefits at UW-Green Bay and veterans’ benefits in the UW System.
