Poverty in education the topic of Institute For Learning Partnership Fall Conference

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Institute for Learning Partnership will present its 14th annual Fall Conference Oct. 4-5 on the pertinent issue of poverty.

“Poverty, Prosperity and Education — The Shaping of a Community” will feature renowned keynote speaker Regenia Rawlinson, a national and international educational expert and author. Rawlinson, author of A Mind Shaped by Poverty: 10 Things Educators Should Know, along with other books, will deliver a keynote address titled “Creating a Climate and Culture for Learning” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4. Her speech and the rest of the Fall Conference events will be held at the University Union at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. There is no cost to attend, but registration is appreciated to assist organizers in planning. Walk-ins also are welcome during the event.

Other Fall Conference events include an opportunity for pre-service teachers to converse with Rawlinson from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 4, along with an educators showcase from 5:30-6:45 p.m. prior to the evening keynote event. On Oct. 5, Rawlinson will present “Show me the Exit Door” from 8-9:15 a.m. That address will be followed by “Stepping Out of Poverty: The Power of Belief,” from local educator Laurice Snyder (9:30-10:30 a.m.), and a showing of locally produced video “The Hidden Homeless” (10:45-11:30 a.m.). Breakout sessions with local experts will follow from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Fall Conference is geared toward educators, administrators, business professionals and community members. It is one of the signature events of UW-Green Bay’s Institute for Learning Partnership, which is composed of the districts of the Northeast Wisconsin Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESAs 7 and 8); regional school boards; PK-12 educators and administrators; the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC); the Professional Development Academy of WEAC; Northeast Wisconsin’s technical colleges; the Partners in Education Program of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce; regional business and community leadership and UW-Green Bay.
