UW-Green Bay faculty recital to feature miniature masterpieces

UW-Green Bay Music faculty and special guests will present the second annual concert of “a very small consortium,” a music ensemble dedicated to the performance of miniature masterpieces, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

This innovative ensemble performs “miniature morsels of music” that are either 100 notes or fewer, or one minute or less in duration. The group sought compositions for performances for the 2012-13 concert season, and in addition to the UW-Green Bay concert, will be playing at concerts presented by Tundra Underground. Additional collaborations are in the works, making this the ensemble’s biggest season of very small concerts to date.

“a very small consortium” (lowercase by design) comes on the heels of a miniatures concert performed during Fall 2011 at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. For many composers, the idea of writing miniature pieces is very appealing, said Assistant Prof. Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, who both composed and will perform various pieces for the concert. The works performed will feature voice, brass, woodwinds, percussion, piano and strings. Admission is free. UW-Green Bay is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. This is the first concert of the 2012-13 season. For more information, visit www.uwgb.edu/music.
